Mobility Profile

Molfetta is a rail-and-road coastal city. For everyday mobility it has three different logics:

1. walkable core — station, centre, old town, port, seafront, restaurants and many civic services;
2. rail corridor — fast access to Bari, Giovinazzo, Bisceglie, Trani, Barletta and the Adriatic line;
3. car / bus / bike edge mobility — beaches, Pulo, industrial zone, Puglia Village, Gran Shopping Mongolfiera, newer residential districts and rural fringe.

For visitors, the best default is usually train + walking, adding local bus, bike sharing, taxi or car only for outer destinations.

Rail

Station Role

Molfetta station sits on the Adriatic railway corridor and is the city’s most important external transport node. It has an assistance service for passengers with reduced mobility and programmed departures under the current timetable period.[1]

The station is especially useful for:

• Bari Centrale;
• Giovinazzo;
• Bisceglie;
• Trani;
• Barletta;
• Foggia and Lecce connections;
• day trips along the central/northern Apulian coast.

Frequency Pattern

Rail frequency varies by hour, direction, weekday/holiday and timetable period, but the corridor is frequent enough to make Molfetta a practical rail-based base.

A sample RFI departure board for the 18:00 hour under the 14 June–12 December 2026 programme shows multiple trains from Molfetta, including departures to Bari Centrale at 18:20 and 18:32, a Lecce train at 18:42, and northbound trains toward Barletta and Foggia.[1]

This supports a practical rule of thumb:

• Bari direction: often multiple options per peak/evening hour, but check current timetable;
• northbound coast: frequent regional/intercity-style options toward Bisceglie, Trani, Barletta and beyond;
• late evening / holidays: verify carefully before relying on spontaneous travel.

Walking from Station

The station-to-centre/old-town walk is manageable for many people, but conditions matter:

• luggage and summer heat can make it less pleasant;
• old-town accommodation may involve stairs or ZTL/parking restrictions;
• major events can alter pedestrian flows and road access;
• local buses can help connect station, expansion districts and industrial/commercial areas.

Bari Airport Connection

Bari Karol Wojtyla Airport is rail-served by Ferrotramviaria. The airport rail stop is inside the airport area, linked to arrivals by a 300-metre tunnel, and served by trains toward Bari Centrale and Barletta.[2]

For Molfetta, the usual public-transport logic is:

1. airport rail to Bari Centrale or another workable interchange;
2. Trenitalia regional/Intercity service north to Molfetta;
3. walk, local bus, bike share, taxi or pickup to final destination.

Current rail and bus timetables are published on the Orari e Percorsi page, including airport and Bari–Barletta line documents.[3] The Bari Centrale–airport rail trip is commonly given as about 15 minutes, but travellers should treat this as a guideline and verify same-day schedules.[4]

Practical caution: late-night flights, Sunday/holiday schedules, strikes, engineering works and missed connections can change the best route. For late arrivals, compare rail, taxi, rental car and pickup.

Local Urban Buses

MTM Molfetta

Urban bus service is operated through MTM — Mobilità e Trasporti Molfetta, with contacts, downloadable route PDFs and urban lines.[5]

The local network can be summarized as follows:[6]

The route structure also distinguishes ordinary weekday lines, festive service, student service and beach service.[5]

Fares and Integrated Ticketing

MTM local-public-transport fares include:[6]

• ordinary single ride: €1.10;
• single ride bought on board: €1.30;
• 10-ride ticket: €8.00;
• monthly pass: €25.00;
• annual pass: €200.00.

Ticketing options include the MooneyGo / former myCicero route for digital mobility purchases and a train+bus option.[7]

Because fares and purchase channels can change, use MTM and Comune pages as live sources before travel.

Train + Bus

Since 1 November 2019, a Trenitalia + Mobilità e Trasporti Molfetta combined ticket has been available for travellers using MTM circular lines to/from the station and regional trains.[6]

This matters for commuters and visitors staying outside the immediate station/centre area: it makes station access part of the public-transport system rather than a separate local problem.

Interurban Buses

Molfetta is also served by interurban bus patterns operated around the STP Bari / Cotrap system. Seasonal general timetables and ticketing links are available through STP/Cotrap channels.[8]

Examples of Molfetta-linked routes include:

• Molfetta Zona 167 → Bari via Giovinazzo, Santo Spirito and Palese;
• Molfetta links toward Giovinazzo and Bari;
• Molfetta–Terlizzi–Ruvo patterns;
• Molfetta–industrial-zone or school-oriented patterns.[9]

Interurban buses are useful for specific trips not well handled by rail, but they are generally less intuitive for occasional visitors than trains. Check exact route, stop, school/non-school calendar and holiday service.

Parking

Paid Parking Macro-Zone

Molfetta has a central paid-parking macro-zone covering streets and spaces including Via Baccarini, Piazza Aldo Moro, Via Umberto, Piazza Effrem, Via Cavour, Via E. Germano, Piazza Margherita di Savoia, Via/Piazza Vittorio Emanuele, Piazza Garibaldi, Piazza Sant’Angelo, Via Dante, Banchina San Domenico and Via M. Colonna.[6]

In this zone, paid parking applies on working days:

• 09:00–13:00;
• 17:00–21:00;

with free periods outside those windows, and a tariff of €0.60/hour or €0.30/half-hour.[6]

MTM manages Molfetta’s blue-line parking, and payment is possible through the ParkingMyCar app.[10]

Piazza Garibaldi Parking

Parcheggio Piazza Garibaldi has separate tariff information, including seasonal day/evening rates and low overnight/off-peak rates; payment is through the automatic cashier with cash, bank cards and telematic/app systems.[6]

Because Piazza Garibaldi is close to the central/old-town area, it is one of the parking references to check for visitors arriving by car.

Resident, Commercial and Special Passes

The central paid zone has resident and commercial pass systems. Residents living in the identified paid-parking zone can request a prepaid pass for indefinite parking during paid windows, generally one pass per household for up to two vehicles.[11]

The Ufficio Pass is located at Via Piazza 29 and opening times are Monday–Friday 08:30–12:00 and 15:30–17:30, with contact email and phone.[12]

Full-electric vehicles can request a free authorization for blue-line parking.[13]

Practical Parking Strategy

For visitors:

• avoid driving into the old town unless accommodation gives precise instructions;
• use central paid parking for short visits, not long uncertainty;
• expect pressure during Holy Week, Madonna dei Martiri, summer evenings and big events;
• for Puglia Village/Mongolfiera, use car-oriented retail parking rather than centre parking;
• for rail day trips, consider whether walking to the station is easier than parking near the station/centre.

Bikeability and Bike Sharing

Bike-Sharing System

Molfetta and Giovinazzo launched an e-bike sharing system in March 2024. The system is operated by VAIMOO, integrated with MTM, and funded through Regione Puglia-backed public funding.[14]

The system includes 120 e-bikes in total:

• 90 e-bikes in 19 virtual stations in Molfetta;
• 30 e-bikes in 6 virtual stations in Giovinazzo.[14]

The project is intended to integrate bike sharing with MTM public transport, including dedicated discounts for MTM users with a valid ticket or periodic pass.[14]

The 2024 inauguration of the Molfetta bike-sharing service was linked to regional sustainable-mobility funding.[15]

Cycling Conditions

Molfetta’s cycling potential is real but uneven:

• the compact centre and waterfront distances are short;
• heat, traffic, parked cars and discontinuous cycling infrastructure can reduce comfort;
• the old town is better for walking than cycling;
• the coast toward Giovinazzo/Bisceglie is attractive but needs attention to traffic and route continuity;
• e-bikes help connect the station, centre, waterfront and some outer districts.

Local mobility commentary argues that Molfetta needs an integrated cycling system rather than isolated road pieces and cites a 5 km cycle segment between Molfetta and Giovinazzo along the former SS16 Adriatica, funded by Regione Puglia, as an example.[16]

Taxis, NCC and Car Use

Molfetta is not best read as a taxi-first city. Taxis, NCC/private drivers and hotel pickups can be useful for:

• late airport arrivals;
• luggage-heavy trips;
• Pulo visits;
• rural restaurants or masserie;
• outer beaches when buses are limited;
• mobility limitations.

A car is useful for regional touring, but in the city centre it brings parking and ZTL constraints. For a first-time visitor focused on old town, port, food and rail day trips, a car is often unnecessary.

Best Mode by Destination

Operational Cautions

• Always verify same-day train and bus times; timetables are seasonal.
• Separate weekday, school-day, holiday and summer services.
• Paid-parking rules, tariffs and apps can change.
• Bike-sharing station locations and fleet availability are operational data: check the app.
• During major processions and summer events, ordinary mobility may be disrupted.
